Benefits of Wood Fuels

benefits of wood fuelsWood has been used for heating and cooking from the beginning. Its use in the UK reduced  as woodlands were felled during the industrial revolution and the advent of cheap fossil fuels.  Rising costs and diminishing availability of fossil fuels, technological advances in wood burning appliances and increasing concern about climate change, have rekindled interest in wood as a viable alternative.

Carbon neutral

Trees absorb as much CO2 whilst they are growing as they release when they are either burnt or left to decay.  This makes them carbon neutral. Using wood instead of fossil fuels for heating reduces carbon emissions and their harmful effects on the environment. Carbon is, of course, produced in the processing of timber and the manufacture and delivery of wood pellets and briquettes. Even so there is an estimated net reduction in CO2 emissions of more than 90% compared with fossil fuels.

Sustainable

Wood is a renewable energy source. All our wood comes from well managed woodlands where harvested trees are replanted. These absorb CO2 as they grow and in turn provide timber and fuel.

We run a saw mill and use waste timber to produce our wood fuels.  Thinnings are sawn into logs, off cuts, shavings are made into briquettes and sawdust  is made into wood pellets. This makes our operation sustainable, with virtually no waste and no landfill.

None of our wood is imported.  We source it as locally as possible, reducing travel miles, providing local employment and contributing to the regional economy.  Because it is locally sourced, the supply is more secure and less vulnerable to the global economy than imported fossil fuels.

Convenient

Modern wood fuelled appliances are highly efficient, clean and easy to use. A pellet boiler, for instance, can provide hot water and central heating virtually automatically, much like an oil burning system. Briquettes are clean, conveniently packed and easy to store.  Logs are delivered seasoned and split for easy use.

Cost effective

Wood fuels are competitively priced. Kilowatt for kilowatt, they are cheaper to run than oil, LPG coal and electricity powered systems.
